Tackling climate change with home working
A media alert released by Extrasys on November 2nd, 2006.
The Stern Report published this week is the first major contribution to the debate on climate change by an economist rather than an environmental scientist. The review suggests that, allowed to proceed unchecked, global warming could shrink the global economy by up to 20% each year.
Additionally, in recent weeks the UK's major political parties have indicated that green taxes will be a major instrument in reducing the environmental impact of business and consumers.
Climate change and the battle against it will have economic consequences
By eliminating excessive amounts of car journeys, offering staff the chance to work more often from home presents business with a simple way of reducing their toll on the environment.
Simon Arbuthnot, then General Manager of Extrasys, said:
"Although teleworking is becoming increasingly widespread,
currently just
12% of the UK's workforce works occasionally from home.
"While we're not advocating that the entire workforce decamps to home offices, it's clear that increasing the prevalence of home working in business would offer a simple way of reducing carbon emissions. Indeed, when the next government considers the introduction of green taxes, this could be an effective tool for protecting the environment."
